Find Out What God Thinks

Monday, April 13, 2009 by Ken Johnson

Reference(s): 2 Samuel 14:36

Scripture

Saul said, “Let’s go after the Philistines tonight! We can spend the night looting and plundering. We won’t leave a single live Philistine!”  “Sounds good to us,” said the troops. “Let’s do it!” But the priest slowed them down: “Let’s find out what God thinks about this.”  2 Samuel 14:36, The Message

Observation

Saul we people-oriented rather than God oriented.  He made impetuous decisions that were based on human emotions and crowd dynamics.   (Several of those knee-jerk decisions are recorded in 1 Samuel 14).   Getting direction from God was a second thought, a lower priority for Saul.

Application

I too have made impetuous decisions.  I’ve made decisions based on how my action would affect the crowd rather than how my action would set with the Lord.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for slowing me down these days.  Thank you that, in a way, I have my own personal Priest in the Holy Spirit.  Spirit, remind me this week, like the priest reminded Saul, to slow down and find out what God thinks about what I am about to do.
